Vietnamese family structure

Children had opportunities to learn the typical family structure in Vietnam and shared how family is structured in their own culture/home in Vietnamese Culture lesson. Since many years ago, Vietnamese tend to live together as a big family with 3 or 4 generations under one roof. As modern time arrives, the structure has gotten smaller to make thing easier for people to work and to adjust to life. However, it would not be a surprise to find a family with more than 2 generations in Vietnam.

For homework this week, children will need to draw a family tree for their own family. Family tree should be coloured and hand in by next Tuesday, 6/11.  Below are some example that children can use as references.

Show me your creativity and the best quality of work!!

Life of Pi

An excellent, breathtaking book by Yann Martel. I remember reading it when I was in year 9.  Such a fantastic, adventurous novel!!! I remember looking at the book cover (the one above) with amazed and kept asking myself what was this book about? Why the tiger? Why the small person there??? I took it off the shelf in the library and checked it out without even a glance at the blurb. I had abandoned all my homework and papers just to finish the book in the night. The more I read, I more I relised that I was drawn into the book and become part of the book myself.

The novel is about a Pi Patel, an Indian boy who experienced a shipwreck when his family immigrated to Canada, bringing most of their zoo animals with them. Fortunately, Pi survived the shipwreck. He stayed in a small lifeboat- with a hyena, zebra, orangutan and a tiger for company-, and adrift in the Pacific Ocean for 227 days. Most of his days were started and ended with thirst and hunger...

A 3D film version of "Life of Pi", directed by Ang Lee is coming to the cinema this November. No doubt that I will buy the ticket the first chance that I get :) Can't miss this, can I ! I enjoy the book so much that can't wait to see how the movie turns out. I'm sure hope it won't make me disappointed.

It had been a productive half-term. The children had worked hard and tried their best to achieve the best possible. Some children had been awarded "yellow ribbon" and enjoying their freedom around school. Keep working hard and don't let the yellow ribbon be taken away :) . There are more yellow ribbons to come before Christmas, offering children more opportunities to show that they are trustworthy and responsible.
Have a good holiday everyone. Enjoy the break and recharge your energy for the next half-term. (teachers and teaching assistants really need this :D)

Don't forget to read loads of books (both for your homework and pleasure)! I'm sure will read plenty.

Wednesday started with Music Coffee Morning. Children had an opportunity to "show off" their music talents. The performers were fantastic and amazing. I'm so proud of them.

The afternoon skipped by quickly. 6X finished the day with  a community project with Poussieres de Vie. This term, Year 6 will work along with PDV children to create comic strips using Comic Life. At first, both BIS and PDV children were shy and hestitated to talk. However, it didn't take long before the room was filled with laughter and joy.

In Vietnamese Culture today, we are learning about Trịnh Công Sơn- a famous musician in Vietnam. He's well-known for his sad but inspirational songs. In 1968, he wrote the song "Nối Vòng Tay Lớn" - "The Great Circle of Vietnam", which is about the reconciliation between the North and the South of Vietnam.

6X had a lovely time listening to Richard Fuller and Lee Kirby sing some of Trịnh Công Sơn's famous songs. As expected, we had a wonderful time singing "Nối Vòng Tay Lớn- The Great Circle of Vietnam" in both Vietnamese and English.

Book Week has been brilliant and is filled with plenty of fun and extraodinary activitties.
Besides having the excuse to read a lot throuhghtout the day, one of the highlights activities is "Character Parade" :) It was amazing to see all the effort that children put into their costume. So colourful, so festive ....just plainly fantastic.
MP3 team dressed up as Sam- "Cat in the Hat". Funny to see many cats wandering around school.
